Luck of the draw? Or help from above?
Although I am not a true lucky duck, such as someone with astounding good luck, I have been amassing memories of my often-lucky situations.
For example, I recently marked the one-year anniversary of the passing of my beloved Jan. We were together for 58 years, and I have been recalling the good and not-so-good times. But in their own way the latter times often could be called blessings in disguise, such as me being blessed enough that she agreed to marry me -- although she took a bit of time.
Also, last month I celebrated (?) my 80th birthday. It was good to remember that through the years with Jan her love and support got me through several heart attacks, bouts with “regular” influenza and forgiving stupid actions (mine).
To be specific, one of the disguised blessings was when at the too young age of 17 I was expelled from the University of San Diego because of failing three classes and getting a D in logic. But I had an A in English! I decided to make up for the failed classes by attending a community college during the summer term, which I achieved. I discovered journalism there and I met Jan. And upon graduation with my AA degree (in journalism, of course) I received the Journalist of the Year award. I mean, how lucky can one get?
Then I was lucky enough to take the advice from Jan and her father to apply for work at the “San Diego Evening Tribune,” a major daily newspaper. I joined as a copy boy and after nine months became a cub reporter. It was lucky that I decided to write youth page and water sports stories. Otherwise, I’d probably still be there working as an ancient go-fer. Instead, I have managed to stumble through some 60 years of newspapering as a reporter, photographer, assistant city editor, news editor, bureau chief and (finally) editor and publisher.
Most recently I’ve encountered good times:
*On a cold, rainy day I locked myself out of my small, but tiny, cabin. Fortunately, I have a key hidden outside. I found it, used it and went inside to get dry and warm. And I hid the key again.
*For any number of reasons, I fell ill early last month and waited five days before seeking medical aid. Now, to spare the details, after five weeks of sometimes wondering if I was going to make it, I’ve survived Influenza A with asthma and COPD. Thank God for medical-care providers including a hospital emergency department, valuable prescriptions, etc. Not to mention lots of prayer from friends (and me).
*One more item: My desk chair was a bit loose, and I finally turned the chair upside-down. I found that the four main screws holding the frame to the seating site were extremely loose. So glad that I checked so that I could tighten the screws. I could have been the butt of a joke.
The more I think about it, I believe that it would take at least a page of print to even highlight the good times realized due to “luck.” And the more I ponder it hits me between the eyes that more than luck, I am the recipient of blessings from on high.
Plus, I would add, you never know what worse luck your bad luck has saved you from. And that’s an idea for another time (if I’m lucky enough and you’re not).
