100 years ago, Sept. 5, 1925

The difficulties in the path of the creation of a national park were outlined by Senator Kendrick. As three-fifths of the area lies within the boundaries of the Crow Indian reservation, a treaty would have to be agreed to by the Indians at the very outset. The Crow tribe, it is rumored, is opposed to releasing its hold upon the area, which is approximately 200 square miles.

75 years ago, Sept. 7, 1950

The Lovell Chronicle

Students of all ages came back to school Tuesday and began getting used to their schedules of the coming year. Figures indicate a large increase in all grades over last year’s enrollment. The most serious problem exists in the first grade. It was deemed advisable to shift the entrance age from September 30, as announced earlier, to September 1. Even with the change in the entrance age the first grade will be overcrowded.

The second grade classes will be as crowded as the first, and in all other grades in the elementary school the classes will range in size from 28 to 35. The high school now has more than 200 pupils enrolled there. Temporary classrooms have been provided, but a crowded condition still remains. Nearly 100 more students have registered in the high school this year.

50 years ago, Sept. 4, 1975

The C.R. Anthony’s store was broken into last Saturday at 2 a.m. and approximately $80 worth of merchandise was stolen. Police officials say the building wasn’t entered but down-filled coats and gloves were stolen off the mannequins from the display window area. The window was broken with a pool ball, which was found by police inside the building. A spokesman for the police department said two strangers were seen Friday night leaving the Medicine Wheel Bar with one of the bar’s pool balls.

Motivational speaker Milton Creagh is coming to Big Horn County Friday. Creagh, the 6-foot-7-inch tall man, who in the past 10 years has spoken to more than 8 million teens, will be visiting schools in Greybull and Lovell Friday, Sept. 8. Nelson Cooney, president of Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America, said of Creagh, “Milton Creagh has the most amazing ability to communicate with young people, without preaching or sounding like he is lecturing, and he delivers such an important, positive message about making the right choices.”

Who’s the best athlete in Lovell High School history? That question could launch many a discussion among sports fans, but a new committee being formed will attempt to make a determination – with the public’s help – with the formation of a hall of fame. A new LHS Hall of Fame Committee was formed this summer and has been working to establish rules and a process for the formation of a hall.
