100 years ago, May 21, 1926

The Cowley Progress

San Point, Idaho – George Sanders, 67, a Lightning Creek rancher, has disappeared, and neighbors are looking after his thousand baby chicks and awaiting a consignment of another thousand. Sanders left a note saying the incessant cheep of the infant poultry was threatening him with insanity. The prospect of another thousand was too much, and he asked his neighbors to see that they were fed.

75 years ago, May 17, 1951

The Lovell Chronicle

Described by different numbers of the party as the first, second and last through the Big Horn Canyon, a party of boatmen returned to their homes Sunday evening after shoving off on the ride of the rapids Friday evening. Those in the party included W.A. Guthrie, Jack Pearson, Jim Ellis and Frank Dalton. 

The only accident of the trip caught them in a rapid below Black Canyon as they thought the ride was nearly over. Hitting a high wave broadside after losing control of the big rubber raft, it was overturned so quickly that Guthrie was trapped underneath. Dalton and Ellis swam to shore, and Guthrie finally escaped from under the boat, while Pearson traveled with the wreck for quite a distance down the swift moving river.

50 years ago, May 20, 1976

The Lovell Chronicle

After the fire started, Mrs. C.C. Mangus knew she’d have to leave her home and the room in the attic filled with more than 250 dolls she’d collected. The fire started in her home north of Byron at about 7 p.m. Friday, about two hours after her television set blew up. But the cherished dolls were unharmed, and the fire was contained to another small room in the attic. She’d received several calls from all over the Big Horn Basin since the fire – people concerned about the fate of her dolls.

A local family hopes to bring a small amusement park to Frannie this summer. Riley and Vickie Cooke of Frannie, who have worked in the carnival equipment business for many years, announced their intention this week to erect a small weekend amusement park in Frannie on land they own west of the Wyoming Port of Entry.

Cooke said 12 rides could be erected: a Ferris wheel, a merry-go-round with 32 horses three abreast, bumper boats, a Comet spinning cage ride, a Paratrooper ride, a dark spook ride, Outlaw kiddie car ride, a kiddie train, a chair swing ride, a 60-foot slide, a Red Baron kiddie airplane ride and a Jungle Trail kids crawling gym.

University of Wyoming senior Tyler Anderson won the hammer throw with a personal-best throw of 202-9 Friday at the Mountain West Conference Championships in Clovis, California. Anderson is a 2010 graduate of Lovell High School.
