The Cowley Progress

Fifty-five towns and cities in Wyoming will offer four years of high school work during the present school year. All these schools expect to be accredited by the State Department of Education and by the University of Wyoming. In 1920, only 13 high schools were so recognized; half the counties were without recognized high schools. New high schools to be accredited for the first time this year are Cowley, Deaver, Yoder, Baggs, Egbert, Ft. Laramie, Glendo and Rock River.

Lovell’s business district improvements made big strides this week with the unveiling of the new front for the Robertson Motor company building on North Nevada Ave. The old frame structure was completely torn down in front and a fine new, masonry, steel and glass front built in. Modernistic design of the high front was done over in new aluminum, which gives the building a striking appearance.

Finishing touches were also made on the building at the corner of Nevada and Main where Dick Jolley has been remodeling his appliance store and the Wyo. Cafe. Here the latest design of sloping front windows and recessed entrance has been used with varnished wood, black glass and bright aluminum trim to good advantage. Dick expects to have a formal opening of his GE Appliance store in the near future.

Organized sports have now hit the kindergarten with the advent of the First Annual Worm and Night Crawler Races held Friday in both the morning and afternoon sessions. The idea was to select several worms for permanent residence in the school’s terrarium, and the best way of selecting the hardy specimens, it was decided, was by having races.

The winners were chosen on the basis of speed and direction. The event had all the excitement that a sporting event should, with fans, owners and trainers gathered at trackside urging on the trusty steeds, except for one little girl, who dropped her worm and ran over to the sink to wash the “icky old stuff” off her hands. The winner of this year’s event, Toby (lineage unknown), came on strong through the stretch to edge Freddy, a chestnut colt.

The former Rose Bowl Cafe on Shoshone Avenue not only went under an ownership change earlier this month but also a name change. Doug and Sharon Lange purchased the Lovell restaurant August 30 and opened Lange’s Kitchen on Thursday, Sept. 9.

The venerable Hyart Theatre, and those who have lovingly cared for her over the years, were honored Friday night by the Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office during a banquet and awards ceremony in Powell. The Hyart Theatre was built in 1950 by Hy and Virga Bischoff featuring the latest technology available at the time. Featuring nearly 1,000 seats, it was a movie palace, considered to be the finest theater in a 500-mile radius. The theater was later placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Attending the banquet Friday were Hyart Theatre board members President Mike Steenbakkers, Jerry Capellen, Jack Brinkerhoff and Oliver Mitchell, as well as Loretta Bischoff. Unable to attend were board members Todd Wilder and Ronda Schroeder.
