Be sure and see “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” at the Ward Hall Tuesday night. See the massive Siberian hounds used to run down slaves in the slavery days. One of them weighs 174 lbs. and the other 152. Bring the children. It will be a rare treat for them for they have never seen the real “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” and may never have an opportunity to see it again. This is not a moving picture but honest to goodness real living characters, which you must see.

Burglars entered the Frannie post office through a rear window and stole the safe, weighing approximately 1,000 pounds, last Tuesday night, according to Warren Clark, Frannie postmaster. The safe was taken from the post office building by way of a rear door. Clark estimated that the intruders used a truck or heavy pickup to take the safe to a highway bridge, where it was dumped into the irrigation canal after the combination had been knocked from the safe.  

The location of the safe was determined by the Frannie canal ditch rider, who noticed private papers belonging to Clark floating in the canal on Wednesday morning at a point about nine miles northeast of Garland. Going west about two miles the ditch rider found the safe nearly submerged in the canal waters.

Anna’s column: After 138 years, Mormons can enter the state of Missouri legally. Recently Gov. Christopher S. Bond rescinded a 138-year-old executive order that called for the extermination or expulsion of Mormons from Missouri. Missouri is my husband’s home state, and we visited two years ago, little dreaming we were there illegally.

Two new teachers bring with them many years of experience to Rocky Mountain High School. Berta Newton has been hired as the art teacher for Rocky Mountain Middle School and RMHS. Clair Argento is the physical education/health teacher at RMHS. Also new to Byron is Jeanie Sanders, fourth grade teacher at Byron Elementary.

Three new teachers and a new counselor adorn the hallways of Lovell Elementary this year. Two homegrown teachers have joined the ranks of Lovell Elementary – Betsy Wardell in fourth grade and Jodi Tirrell in third grade. Patty Coe is the new Title 1 teacher at Lovell Elementary. Tina Billman is the new counselor at Lovell Elementary and will be visiting the middle school one day a week.

Lovell Middle School has just one brand new teacher, as does Lovell High School. Joining the staff at LMS is Candace McMillan, teaching sixth grade language arts. At the high school, the new face is Mary Swanson, special education teacher.
