Emanuel Christensen was in from the ranch last night accompanied by Mrs. Christensen. Asked by the cub reporter how he was coming, he said, “Haven’t time to talk, busier than a dog with fleas. Lambing the best crop of young woolies ever lambed on the flat. Busy making money. Come on, wife, let’s go!” And away they went, headed straight for the big ranch in their fine Overland sedan.

Charles Andrew Monk, one of the county’s oldest residents, celebrated his 96th birthday anniversary, Saturday, March 10. His long life has been spent as a pioneer in the western states and parent of a family, which now number 91 members.
One of the memorable events in his life was driving a herd of 5,080 cattle from Winnemucca, Nevada, to Cheyenne in 1882. He also served for a time as a Navajo and Apache interpreter for the U.S. Cavalry under Gen. Critchlaw. Today Mr. Monk lives with his son, John, at Cowley. He is in good health, but his behavior occasionally causes concern for despite his age, he frequently takes a walk of two or three miles.

A new, regular feature starts in this week’s Chronicle. Students from Lovell, Cowley, Byron and Deaver-Frannie high schools will write a column once each month on their school. Lovell High senior Anna Ontiveroz gets things off to a newsy start this week.
By Anna Ontiveroz: There have been rumors going around saying the student lounge may reopen. The lounge had been closed earlier in the year because of damage to walls and furniture. Money will be raised for a pool table to be set up in the lounge for students’ use. If the lounge does open again, it has been decided that only honor students and seniors will be allowed in it.

Lovell first grade teacher Sharon Gerhardt was recognized by her colleagues Patty Despain and Jane Bushnell, and Rocky Mountain Middle School Principal Devin Mitchell honored his music teacher Christine “Chris” Olson as the District No. 1 Educator of the Year. As a grand finale to their service to Lovell and north Big Horn County, Hack and Janean Jolley were honored as the 2001 Citizens of the Year at last Saturday’s Lovell Area Chamber of Commerce Community Banquet.
