Tales of strange and record breaking oil wells are told in the current issue of the Petroleum Engineer, international oil publication, which has listed most of the famous wells of the world in its review. “In the later history of the state (Wyoming) the high point was discovery in 1909 of the Salt Creek field, one of the major reservoirs in the country. A surprising well in Wyoming was the Mammoth Oil Co. No. 301-A in the Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 3 (Teapot Dome). This well, on October 5, 1922, when drilling at 1,520 feet suddenly broke into a crevice from which oil gushed in a solid 12½-inch column over the crown block of the 82-foot derrick.”

Town of Lovell Council members voted Monday night for limited Christmas lighting but were informed that Pacific Power and Light will not pick up the bill this year. While many cities and towns across the United States are discontinuing Christmas lighting altogether, Lovell chose to limit the length of time the lights are on (off promptly at 10 p.m.) and shut the lights off earlier than usual in the new year. Due to the energy shortage, PP&L would not offer free power for Christmas lighting to the town as they have in past years. The council voted to pick up the tab themselves.

To be a part of one state championship is something special, but to be a part of three is something extra special. Nine Rocky Mountain seniors and Coach Ben Smith have that honor, being a part of the 1995 State Championship team, the 1997 State Championship team and the 1998 State Championship team that defeated Pinedale Saturday, 48-26.
The nine seniors that began their Grizzly careers as freshmen are Ryan Woodward, Josh Gruell, Justin Steinmetz, Brandon Jones, Kevin Jiracek, Nathan Roberts, Steven Muller, Kade Ames and Kendal Wambeke. Three other seniors joined later, Andrew Lange and Cliff Steiger as sophomores and Zach Sagrilla this year. Since 1995, the Grizzlies, under head coach Ben Smith, are 38-1.

Ron Massine has seen a lot of changes over the years, and during 32 years of custodial and maintenance work in Lovell schools, 26 as maintenance director, he has rolled with and adapted to the changes. And that’s why the good-natured Massine could retire on September 1 with the satisfaction of a job well done.
