Although they had no individual champions, the Rocky Mountain Grizzlies had a successful meet at the Spartan Invitational Saturday, producing 13 medalists during the tournament.
“We wrestled a little bit better this week than we did in Lovell,” head coach Tim Jones said. “Everyone won at least one match and we placed 13 of 15 in the top five in their weights. We lost some matches that we could have won, so there is plenty to work on in the room this week.
“We have a great group of kids who keep working. If we do that all year, we will be fine. We had no champions, which is always a little disappointing, but we placed seven in the top three. We had a pretty good week.”
The top placers for the Grizz were Madden Cooley and Cache Thompson, each placing second. Cooley, a sixth grader, went 3-1 in the 77-pound B weight class, dominating his opponents with a pin in 2:06, a 17-1 technical fall and a 16-7 major decision before falling to Braxten Link of Greybull in the championship match.
Thompson, an eighth grader, wrestled to a 3-1 record at 110B, pinning his first three opponents before falling to Forrest Kleinfeldt of Powell in the title match.
Eighth grader Jesse Ganoung placed third at 98 pounds in the A division with a 3-1 record, losing only in the second round 5-0 and winning three matches with two pins and a major decision.
Benson Jolley wrestled to a 3-1 mark at 110A to place third, falling 7-6 in the first round but then winning three straight on pins.
Eighth grader Alex Walker was also 3-1 at 220A to place third, falling in the second round on a tie-breaker and winning on a pin, 10-2 major decision and 5-0 decision.
Sixth grader Hudson Moore managed to wrestle five matches and placed third at 77B with a 4-1 record, like Cooley, losing only to Link of Greybull and otherwise recording two pins, a major decision and a 7-0 decision.
Sixth grader Dally Malson went 4-1 at 132B to place third, dropping his first match but then winning four straight by three pins and a forfeit.
Other RMMS placers were:
Fourth place – Michael Broederlow 175A, 2-2;
Fifth place -- Ethan Haslem 126A, 1-2; Zach Unruh 132A, 2-2; Brogan King 155A, 2-2; Xavier Hetland 115B, 2-2;
Sixth place – Tejeo Scheeler 120B – 3-3.
Other wrestler competing were – Jason Unruh 91B, 2-2; Rowan Hanusa 98B, 1-2.
As a team, the Grizzlies placed sixth in the 13-team field with 92 points, just behind Lovell and ahead of Worland, Riverton, Thermopolis, Wyoming Indian, Dubois, Greybull and Shoshoni. Lander won the meet with 178.5 points.
Next up for the Grizz is the Worland Invitational Saturday at 10 a.m. The Shoshoni Invitational follows on Friday, Nov. 17, at 2 p.m.
