RMMS Lady Grizzlies ‘A’ team off to 6-1 start
The Rocky Mountain Middle School girls basketball teams are off to a hot start nearly halfway through their season.
The RMMS A team has forged a 6-1 record, losing only to Shoshoni on the road, while the B team is 2-2 and the C team 0-1.
The Lady Grizzlies have 14 girls out this season – four in eighth grade, three in seventh grade and seven in sixth grade.
Here’s a season summary so far provided by head coach Doug Arnold:
October 19 at Ten Sleep – A team won 25-11; Brooklyn Larsen with 9 points, Kennedy Brimhall with 8 points.
October 20 vs. Meeteetse at home – A team won 21-15; Leah Haslem and Annie Crosby with 6 points each, Larsen 5. The B team won 30-9.
October 21 at Shoshoni – A team lost 28-13; Crosby with 7 points. B team lost 30-8; Taylor Grandalen with 6 points. C team lost 22-10; Grandalen scored all 10 points.
October 24 vs. Ten Sleep at home – A team won 30-10; Brimhall 16 points, Haslem and Larsen 6 points apiece.
October 28 at Riverside – A team won 23-10; Crosby 8 points, Brimhall 6, Larsen 5 and Sawyer Bassett 4. B team won 30-2; Grandalen 16 points, Crosby 8.
October 30 vs. Greybull at home – A team won 21-8; Brimhall 10 points, Bassett and Crosby 4 points each.
“I’ve been most impressed by the girls’ defensive tenacity,” Arnold said. “These girls like to play defense, and they will get after you. What we lack in numbers they make up for with their energy. They only allowed 8 points to the opposition, which means we only needed to score 9 points to win. As a coach, I love how much pride they take in their defense. Leah Haslem, especially, always has a hand on the ball or in your face.”
The B team lost 20-12. Grandalen and Bassett scored 4 points each, Daizy Weinand and Elle Ganoung 2 points apiece.
October 31 vs. Burlington at home -- Final game of the week and another win for the Lady Grizz, Arnold reported. The A team won 26-15; Brimhall scored 11 points, Haslem 6, Crosby 4 and Bassett 3.
“The leadership of Brooklyn Larsen has been phenomenal,” Arnold said. “She’s the tip of the spear on defense and pesters opposing guards relentlessly. As our floor leader she’s triple C: cool, calm and consistent. She rarely gets a break and never complains. She’s not real boisterous, but she lets her on-court action speak loudly.”
The Lady Grizz are now off until Thursday, Nov. 9, when they host Lovell at 4:15 p.m. They host Shoshoni November 11 at 10 a.m. and travel to Burlington November 14 for a 4:15 p.m. tip-off.
