Rocky celebrates Homecoming

It’s back-to-back homecoming celebrations in north Big Horn County. With Lovell High School wrapping up homecoming this week, Rocky Mountain Middle/High School will take center stage next week to celebrate Homecoming 2025 with the theme Once Upon a Time.

The fun begins Monday, Sept. 22, and since Monday is an in-service day for teachers with no school for students, there will be no dress-up day. However, according to student council advisor Tori Kidgell, the annual Buff Puff boys volleyball game will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the main gym.

“Teams will be coached by the senior volleyball girls and assisted by their fellow teammates,” Kidgell said. “Stephanie Ames is setting up the brackets and will be holding a draft for the teams to be picked.”

The middle school volleyball team will play in Powell starting at 4:15 p.m.

Tuesday is Character Day with students dressing as their favorite fairytale or fictional character. The Lady Grizzlies high school netters will host rival Lovell at 5 and 6 p.m. in the main gym.

Wednesday is Class Color Day, with seniors wearing blue, juniors red, sophomores pink, freshmen green, eighth graders purple, seventh graders grey, sixth graders hunter orange and staff members brown and gold. The annual Homecoming Olympics will be held Wednesday during sixth, seventh and eighth periods, 12:50 to 3:22 p.m.

Thursday is Adam Sandler and is packed full of homecoming events, Kidgell said.

“We have a full day of activities,” she said. “This year we are moving our high school talent show to Thursday afternoon (sixth to eighth period). The evening will kick off with a walking taco dinner, sponsored by the junior class. Serving starts at 5:30 p.m. and will go throughout the evening. The price is $8, which includes a walking taco with Frito or Tostito chips and a dessert bar of your choice. Bottled water will be available for $1. There will also be a bake sale where patrons can buy baked goods along with the walking tacos.”

The Powder Puff football game for girls will be held at 6 p.m. with teams coached by the senior football players.

“Coach C (Tobee Christiansen) puts his football knowledge to work and heads that game for us,” Kidgell said.

The annual pep rally starts at 7 p.m. and will feature games, skits, cheers and the crowning of the homecoming royalty, Kidgell said. The bonfire that can be seen from space will follow the pep rally.

The Grizz will travel to Greybull for a sixth-grade football game at 6 p.m.

Friday is Brown and Gold Day, and the annual homecoming parade at 9 a.m.

“We will line up behind the high school at 8:45 and will leave the high school at 9,” Kidgell said. “We head north on South Second Street East toward Main Street and end up at the elementary school. We would love for the homecoming parade to be a community event. We want people to come and watch, and people are welcome to have a float in the parade if they want. If anyone is interested in having a float in the parade, they need to contact me at tkidgell@bighorn1.com by Monday, Sept. 22.”

The Grizzlies will host Big Piney Friday at 1 p.m. for the homecoming game with royalty introduced at halftime. The volleyball team will host Greybull at 4 and 5 p.m., and the middle school and high school cross country teams will run in Worland starting at 2 p.m.

Saturday, the Grizzly netters will host Shoshoni, with the middle school matches starting at 10 a.m. and the high school at 1 p.m.

The homecoming dance will take place Saturday at the Cowley Community Center from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m., sponsored by the sophomore class. Prices are $7 for a single person and $10 for a couple.
