Rocky Mountain Grizzlies dominate Wyoming Indian with a 61-0 shutout victory
The Rocky Mountain Grizzlies football team delivered a commanding performance last Friday, shutting out Wyoming Indian 61-0 in an impressive display of dominance on both sides of the ball. Head coach Jessee Wilson praised his team’s focus and preparation throughout the week, as they worked hard to sharpen their execution and perfect their playbook.
“We spent the week focusing on ourselves and working to execute our base plays more effectively with proper technique,” Wilson said. “We knew they threw the ball quite a bit, so we wanted to make sure to rep our corners in coverage.”
Going into the game, the Grizzlies emphasized sticking to their core plays and continuing to polish newer concepts.
“The emphasis this week was to do what we do and do it well,” Wilson said.
His team did just that, dominating the game with a well-balanced attack.
The Grizzlies excelled in the ground game, totaling 274 rushing yards on 23 attempts. They scored six rushing touchdowns in the process. Leading the charge was Triffen Jolley, who carried the ball seven times for 126 yards and two touchdowns, including a long run of 45 yards. Joaquin Scheeler added to the offense with five carries for 74 yards, finding the end zone twice, including a 44-yard run. Cooper Ward chipped in with another rushing touchdown, finishing with 30 yards on 3 carries.
Wilson was particularly pleased with his quarterbacks’ ability to contribute to the rushing game.
“Our quarterbacks did a nice job running the ball, which is something we’ve been working on improving,” Wilson said.
The Grizzlies passing game, though not the focal point, was also highly effective. Lafe Files completed 4 of 8 passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns, including a 73-yard bomb to Hudson May, who added a receiving touchdown to his special teams contributions. Will Watts was another standout in the passing game, catching two passes for 77 yards and two touchdowns, including a 39-yard catch. Scheeler also threw for 42 yards, connecting on two of three passes and tossing another touchdown with a 39-yard strike.
In total, the Grizzlies tallied 158 passing yards and three passing touchdowns, efficiently balancing both the run and the pass.
The Grizzlies’ defense was a fortress, delivering a shutout performance.
“Anytime you pitch a shutout in a nine-man football game, you’ve got to be happy with that,” Wilson said.
His defensive unit controlled the game, led by Mason Moss, who had a standout performance with two interceptions and contributed on special teams, as well.
May also played great on defense, providing tight coverage and forcing difficult throws. The Grizzly linebackers did a great job of attacking the run, and the defensive line continued to hold down the middle.
“Our secondary got more work than they have had all year, which was good for them,” Wilson said.
On special teams, May electrified the crowd with a 73-yard kick return, adding a touchdown to his all-around stellar performance.
Coach Wilson commended his team’s performance but recognized areas for improvement, especially in handling varying defensive fronts.
“We did some things really well, but there are certainly things we still need to get cleaned up,” he said. “One thing we need to continue to work on is making sure that we are able to adjust up front and block different fronts that we see during the game.”
This week, the Grizzlies gear up for their next game, a homecoming matchup against Greybull.
“This week, with it being homecoming, is going to be a fun week. We’ve got a solid opponent in Greybull coming to town, and we look forward to seeing everyone on Friday,” Wilson said.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
With a 61-0 victory under their belts, the Grizzlies are looking to build on their momentum and continue their push for a strong finish to the season.
