Schriver ‘comes home’ to ride in Tour de Wyoming

A familiar face cruised into Lovell on her bicycle last Thursday as part of the Tour de Wyoming bicycle rally.

Lisa Schriver, a 1981 graduate of Lovell High School, was part of the large group of cyclists who camped on the LHS campus, some in the gym and others on the football practice field. She was greeted by longtime friend Lori Minchow Scheffler, with whom she competed in volleyball, basketball, softball and track and field.

The daughter of Blackie and Linda Schriver (later Linda Eggeman), Lisa moved to Lovell in 1972 and attended Lovell schools from third grade on. After graduation, she went on to Black Hills State for her undergraduate degree and then received a master’s degree at Northern State University.

A longtime resident of Aberdeen, South Dakota, where Northern State is located, she has coached women’s basketball and volleyball at both the high school and college level in Aberdeen, four to five years in high school and 18 or 19 years at the college, she said. She also worked as an assistant athletic director at Northern and later worked as the Youth Sports Coordinator at the Aberdeen YMCA.

Schriver said she started riding bicycles when she was young when her mom wanted to “get me out of the house.” She said she rode “all over town” and even out to Horseshoe Bend with then Lori Minchow and others.

This was Schriver’s first Tour de Wyoming, and she said there were 250 riders who won a lottery to participate, plus another 30 or so riders who were able to ride if a partner or friend was participating in the event as a support staff volunteer. Riders hailed from 32 states, she said.

The group gathered in Powell on July 11, and the tour began on July 12 with a regional ride to Deaver, Lovell, Highway 32 south and back to Powell via the Willwood. The tour took riders to Red Lodge Monday, to Cody via Belfry Tuesday, the South Fork Road Wednesday and the Greybull Highway to Lovell Thursday. Riders were to return to Powell Friday morning.

Schriver has also participated in tours in Iowa and South Dakota, she said.

While Lisa was riding in Northwest Wyoming last week, husband Steve Millard was staying with Dave and Lori Scheffler in Lovell, and Schriver was able to spend the final night of the tour at the Schefflers’ home, as well.

The couple is in the process of moving to Mesquite, Nevada, to be near Lisa’s mom Linda Eggeman, who taught school in Lovell for many years.
