Sheriff report: Airplane flips at local airport
Deputies assisted at the scene of a light airplane crash at the North Big Horn County Airport north of Cowley on Memorial Day.
According to Deputy Keri Angell, pilot Ron McClure, 85, of Lovell was landing his airplane around 8:52 a.m. when it lost power, bounced off the runway and ran into a mud hole at the side of the runway, causing the plane to nose over.
McClure refused an ambulance but said he would get checked out and was OK. The National Transportation Safety Board was notified.
Other calls
The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office received the following calls for the week of May 18-24:
May 18: 3:05 a.m. – A Cowley resident reported that, as he was leaving for work, he saw a white car parked near his house flashing its lights. He turned around and noticed the car had moved to a position near the elementary school and that one headlight was out. The driver was waving at him, he reported. A deputy responded, and the vehicle had left the area.
May 19: 3:10 a.m. – A deputy assisted Lovell Police with a report from a female party that someone was looking in her window on Hampshire Avenue.
7:01 a.m. – A caller reported that a black stud colt was on her property causing problems with her horses. She called back and said the colt’s owner had arrived to collect the horse.
11:02 a.m. – A deputy responded to U.S. Highway 310 and Road 5 near Deaver for a report of a brown horse out near the highway. No loose horse could be found, but a horse in a pasture at the location fit the description of the horse reported as out.
12:50 p.m. – A reported suspicious person on Road 15 near Lovell was a man fixing a fence.
2:34 p.m. – A deputy assisted at the scene of a minor fire at the Bair Trailer Court in Lovell.
May 20: 7:48 a.m. – Cows were reported out on the highway near Rocky Mountain Middle/High School in Cowley. A deputy got the cows off the highway and contacted the owner.
8:41 p.m. – A black cow was reported out near the highway at Lane 12 and Wyoming Highway 32 west of Lovell. The owner was contacted and said he would come take care of the cow.
May 21: 11:05 p.m. – A caller reported a missing white lab with an orange collar in the Cowley area on Road 7.
May 22: 8:18 a.m. – A calf was reported out two miles northeast of Byron on U.S. 14A. The Wyoming Highway Patrol was notified.
12:02 p.m. - Horses reported as running loose on Lane 5½ near Deaver ran back into their pasture as a deputy arrived. The deputy shut the gate.
12:08 p.m. – A deputy checked on a driver of a semi that had broken down at Lane 12 and Highway 32 west of Lovell. The driver said he had called his company’s repair team.
May 23: 10:33 a.m. – A child playing with a cell phone that was no longer in service accidently called 911. A deputy advised that even a deactivated phone can call the emergency number.
May 24: 2:06 a.m. – A deputy checked on a vehicle that was unattended and off the highway about a mile northeast of Byron on U.S. 14A.
1:15 p.m. – A caller reported a dead cow in the Shoshone River near the bridge two miles west of Lovell.
8:12 p.m. – A deputy assisted at the scene of a car slide-off on the Big Horn Mountains east of Lovell near Wyoming High Country.
