Sheriff report: Cowley Merc staff doesn’t fall for scam

The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office received the following calls for the week of April 7-13:

April 7: 7:02 a.m. – A caller reported hitting a deer east of Lovell on U.S. 14A, saying the deer was dead and that he pulled it to the side of the highway. He wanted to notify dispatch that the vehicle would be there until it could be moved. The Wyoming Highway Patrol was notified.

12:28 p.m. – A caller complained about speeding on Road 10 near Lovell. A deputy made contact with the driver and told her that she needs to keep her speed down when farm equipment is on the road.

5:28 p.m. – A deputy investigated a case of vandalism in which a rock was thrown through a window at the old Byron school building sometime between April 4 and 6.

6:23 p.m. – A manager at the Cowley Mercantile reported that someone had called and told an employee to remove all of the money from the till and take it to a location in Powell because a fire extinguisher payment was not received. The employee called a supervisor, who notified the sheriff’s office about the scam.

April 8: A landowner working a controlled burn on Road 3 near Deaver asked for help from the Deaver-Frannie Fire Department to extinguish the fire after the Lovell dispatch center called to say that a burn order was in place due to high winds.

3:06 p.m. – A fender bender was reported between two employees at CETCO east of Lovell. No citations were issued.

4:11 p.m. – Callers reported a suspicious vehicle approaching children and adults in Cowley with the occupants saying they do home repair and have items for sale in their truck, a dark blue Toyota Tacoma with a matching camper shell and Idaho plates. The truck was gone when the deputy responded, and other agencies and communities were advised. The truck was also reported in Cody and Lovell.

April 9: 2:41 p.m. – A neighbor reported livestock guard dogs loose on Lane 2½ near Frannie. The owner was contacted and later reported that the place where the dogs were getting out had been fixed.

April 10: 3:30 p.m. – A deputy removed a driving hazard, a garbage can lid, from the Shoshone River bridge west of Lovell.

3:36 p.m. – A Cowley resident flagged down a deputy to report that a goat at his/her residence was stuck in a fence. A deputy freed the goat.

April 11: 7:43 a.m. – A caller reported that a neighbor’s horse was on his property near Byron and that he put the horse in his own pasture. He put the missing horse on Facebook, and the owner said he would come and get the horse, having been out of town.

9:10 p.m. – A caller reported two dogs running loose on Center in Byron. The caller took the dogs home and gave dispatch his phone number in case someone called to report the dogs missing.

April 12: 8:13 p.m. – A horse was reported loose in Byron. A huge windstorm had blown a fence down, allowing the horse to escape. The owner fixed the fence and retrieved the horse.

April 13: 1:34 p.m. – A caller reported that she locked her keys in her truck on Benchview Lane with two dogs inside. A deputy responded and got the truck unlocked.

Note: The above calls were received by the Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office. Persons arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and charges made upon initial arrest may be amended or dismissed as determined by the County Attorney.
