Sheriff report: Crashes and disabled vehicles mark busy week for deputies
The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office received the following calls for the week of July 14-20:
July 14: 5:27 p.m. – The Lovell Police Department advised to be on the lookout for a man wearing “a dirty hoodie and dirty, baggy clothes” who had been in Lovell but hitchhiked to Frannie, where he was reportedly lying alongside the highway. A deputy responded, but the individual was gone when the deputy arrived at the site.
July 15: 7:20 a.m. – Horses reported loose northeast of Byron on U.S. 14A were rounded up by the owner.
9:49 a.m. – The Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene of a minor kitchen fire on Perkins Lane south of Lovell.
11:32 a.m. – Heavy rains caused a rockfall around 25 miles east of Lovell on U.S. 14A on the west flank of the Big Horns. WYDOT was called to remove the bowling ball sized rocks from the highway.
1:20 p.m. – Deputies assisted at the scene of a one-vehicle rollover one mile north of Frannie. The 2007 Chevy four-door was off the road, and the driver, reported as Gordon Schiermeister of Cody, was out of the vehicle but was then transported to North Big Horn Hospital. The Wyoming Highway Patrol investigated the crash.
2:54 p.m. – A woman called to report that a snake had crawled into her car’s engine compartment on Road 7 near Lovell, and she needed assistance. A deputy responded and could find no snake.
5:48 p.m. – A deputy assisted at the scene of a vehicle vs. deer collision two miles west of Cowley on U.S. 310. The driver of the 2013 Chevy 1500, reported as Ronald See of Powell, was not injured, and there was no road blockage. The Highway Patrol investigated the crash.
5:58 p.m. – A caller from Deaver reported that someone was poking around in her yard. A deputy responded and could not see a vehicle matching the description of the vehicle reported to have been parked at the home.
6:59 p.m. – A deputy moved tire debris from an apparent blowout from the highway south of Byron on Wyoming 32.
9:17 p.m. – A tree was reported down and lying across the road on Lane 8 near Lovell. North Road and Bridge was called to remove the tree.
10:38 p.m. – A Michigan semi slid off the road on Wyoming 37 one mile north of U.S. 14A east of Lovell. There was no road blockage. The driver had placed reflective triangles on the road and was arranging for a tow truck.
July 16: 12:36 a.m. – A deputy removed five loose cows from the highway at U.S. 310 and Lane 12 south of Lovell.
1:31 p.m. – A report of shots fired on Lane 12 near Lovell turned out to be an elderly man checking out a pistol he had been working on. He had stopped in the middle of the road and fired into an open field, but there were houses in the area. A deputy responded and issued a citation for reckless endangerment.
3:15 p.m. – A reporting party stated that an employee of the Byron Cemetery District had struck his arm while driving away from him at the cemetery north of town. The incident is under investigation.
5:06 p.m. – Sheriff’s personnel assisted at the scene of a brush fire near Pond 5 in the Yellowtail Wildlife Habitat Unit northeast of Lovell.
July 17: 7:52 a.m. – The Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene of an arrest in Deaver made by the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation.
2:48 p.m. – Deputies assisted the Department of Revenue with the confiscation of 132 packs of mislabeled cigarettes at Good 2 Go west of Lovell.
7:12 p.m. – Deputies assisted at the scene of a motorhome fire on U.S. 14A a mile and a half past the Five Springs turnoff on the face of the Big Horns east of Lovell (see related story).
9 p.m. – Deputies responded to the scene of a one-vehicle crash on the Big Horns just east of the above motorhome fire. A Chevy Suburban blew a tire and hit a rock wall. The driver, from Gillette, stayed with the vehicle for the investigation, but the passenger, from Powell, was transported to North Big Horn Hospital by ambulance.
July 18: 4:48 p.m. – A deputy helped remove a traffic hazard from the road near Good 2 Go after a washing machine and cabinet fell out of a truck.
July 19: 10:50 p.m. – A deputy assisted at the scene of a broken-down vehicle two miles southeast of Cowley on U.S. 310. The occupants of the vehicle, a Volkswagen Jetta with Texas plates, were taken home by another party and promised to remove the car the following day.
July 20: 8:39 a.m. – A caller reported an injured antelope near Georgia-Pacific. Game and Fish was notified.
8:54 a.m. – A caller reported that a neighbor on Lane 12 near Lovell had left water on and was flooding their property. The neighbor’s brother was called and said he would get the water shut off.
