Sheriff report: Donkey disappears after walking down the Cannery Road
The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office received the following calls for the week of Oct. 21-27:
October 21: 3:30 p.m. – A vehicle with Ohio plates was observed by a deputy parked on Main Street in Cowley for a couple of days. It had a flat tire and was later moved.
8:30 p.m. – The Wyoming Highway Patrol reported a chocolate lab with a blue collar running down the highway on U.S. 14A just west of Byron. There is no county dog ordinance, so the sheriff’s department was not able to apprehend the animal.
October 23: 9:32 a.m. – Information was received at the Sheriff’s Office in Basin that U.S. Highway 14 from Burgess Junction to Dayton was opened up following better control of the Elk Fire.
3:19 p.m.—A caller reported that a full-sized silver van blew a stop sign and was speeding at the intersection of U.S. 14A and U.S. 310 west of Lovell, possibly a DUI. A Lovell Police officer happened to be following the vehicle and stopped the van to talk to the driver, who was not intoxicated.
October 24: 9:10 a.m. – A deputy provided traffic control on U.S. 310 near Cowley for cattle being moved across the highway. A similar service was provided at 1:51 p.m. for cattle being moved between Cowley and Deaver.
5:09 p.m. – A car vs. deer accident was reported on Highway 14A just west of Byron. The North Big Horn Ambulance responded to the scene, as did the Wyoming Highway Patrol to investigate the accident. The driver from Dayton was driving a red Ford F150.
October 25: 7:49 a.m. – Some 20 head of cows were out of their pasture on U.S. 14A west of Byron. The call was referred to the Highway Patrol.
8:58 a.m. – A veterinarian from Powell called to report that a customer’s dog had been attacked by a neighbor’s two dogs on North Heart Mountain Street in Byron the night before and asked dispatch to contact the attacking dogs’ owner to see if the dogs were up to date on their shots. Dispatch was unable to reach the dog owner.
12:42 p.m. – After a caller reported a firearm lost or stolen in Cowley, a deputy informed the caller that a stolen property form needed to be filled out so the weapon could be entered into NCIC, which the reporting party did.
1:16 p.m. – A caller reported that his mother in Byron was being threatened. Both the caller and the alleged aggressor live out of state, but extra patrol was initiated for the mother’s home.
October 26: 7:45 a.m. – After a REDDI report was received, a traffic stop was initiated for a vehicle traveling between Cowley and Frannie. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the Wyoming Highway Patrol arrested Taylor Hopkin of Deaver for DUI. A deputy assisted at the scene.
11:28 a.m. – A caller reported a donkey walking down the middle of the road on the Cannery Road on the west end of the road near Cowley. A deputy responded but was not able to locate the animal.
October 27: 1:45 p.m. – A caller reported a dog with no collar and no tabs loose on Road 12 near Lovell. The Lovell Police Department picked up the dog.
2:50 p.m. – A deputy assisted at the scene of a motorcycle crash on Highway 37 near the turnoff to Devil’s Canyon Overlook. The rider suffered head injuries and was transported to North Big Horn Hospital, then taken by First Flight to Billings. The Lovell Volunteer Fire Department provided traffic control at the scene.
9:09 p.m. – A caller reported that he believes someone was stealing several cars from a junk yard on Highway 32 near Byron. The owner of the yard was contacted and said he saw no activity on his surveillance camera, and nothing was missing.
