Sheriff report: Flying fruit strikes car in Cowley

The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office received the following calls for the week of August 11-17:

August 11: 2:01 a.m. – Deputies assisted at the scene of a fire on Carmon Avenue in Lovell (see story last week).

7:13 a.m. – A deputy noticed a vehicle door open on Carmon Avenue in Lovell and closed the door.

2:09 p.m. – Deputies drove east 28 miles on U.S. 14A to the top of the Big Horns responding to a report of a semi that had jack-knifed, but upon arrival the truck was no longer at the reported location.

3:44 p.m. – Deputies responded to a report of cows getting onto a male subject’s property on Road 1.5 near Deaver. Information was provided to the state livestock investigator, and deputies fixed the fence near the reporting individual’s house that had been torn up by the cows.

August 12: 6:44 a.m. – Deputies assisted at the scene of a downed power line in Cowley. Members of the Lovell Volunteer Fire Department removed the line, and Rocky Mountain Power was called to make repairs.

7:20 a.m. – A female caller reported a suspicious person pacing back and forth in front of her home on Heart Mountain Street in Byron. A responding deputy was unable to locate the individual.

3:50 p.m. – A deputy witnessed a truck driver fall while tarping his road near the Wyo-Ben plant west of Lovell. He checked out OK.

August 13: 3:41 p.m. – A report was called in about kids bullying other kids at the park in Byron. The caller could not identify the alleged bullies, but extra patrol of the area was initiated.

August 15: 6:30 a.m. – A woman from  Cowley reported that her credit card had been stolen. She said she last saw her card at the Powell hospital, where she works, and she noted suspicious activity on the card. The Powell Police Department was contacted.

10:13 a.m. – A caller reported that he had hit a deer 24 miles east of Lovell on U.S. 14A, saying the collision demolished his hood and grill. The driver, Flint Harvey of Powell, said his vehicle was still drivable. Sheriff Ken Blackburn advised drivers to be aware that harvest season causes animals to move around more than normal.

6:03 p.m. – A caller reporting longhorns loose on Road 5 between Byron and Cowley was informed that the area is open range.

11:19 p.m. – A caller reported that his vehicle was hit by an apple while he was driving on Main Street in Cowley. A responding deputy was unable to locate any fruit throwers.

August 16: 3:14 p.m. – A deputy stopped to assist a driver who was having coolant line issues with his vehicle. The driver from Worland said he had already arranged for a tow.

3:53 p.m. – A caller reported that, with Town of Byron permission, he would be shooting off fireworks at the park Saturday between 9 and 9:30 p.m. in case anyone called reporting fireworks.

9:19 p.m. – An individual from Byron called 911 to report fireworks in Byron, wondering if they are allowed.

10:02 p.m. – A caller asked to speak to a deputy about getting someone trespassed from a sister’s place. A deputy called to issue a verbal order.

August 17: 3:34 p.m. – Deputies assisted with the investigation at the scene of a one-vehicle crash three miles west of Cowley on U.S. 310. A female driver was arrested by the Wyoming Highway Patrol for DUI. (See related story.)

6:37 p.m. – A caller reported that when he went inside to prepay for gas at Good2Go, someone started pumping gas on his credit card. A deputy helped sort everything out, and each party paid for his own gas.

7:18 p.m. – A caller from Deaver reported a 8- or 9-year-old boy driving a red dune buggy around town. The caller said she spoke with the boy’s mother, who argued with her, so she called the sheriff’s office.

9:50 p.m. – North Search and Rescue responded to Horseshoe Bend after it was reported that an aluminum fishing boat with no lights was overdue. As SAR members were on their way, the boaters returned safely to shore.

Note: The above calls were received by the Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office. Persons arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and charges made upon initial arrest may be amended or dismissed as determined by the County Attorney.
