Sheriff report: Slide-offs reported but no injuries noted

The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office received the following calls for the week of Jan. 7-12:

January 7: 9:33 a.m. – A deputy reported seeing an apparently abandoned black Jeep Cherokee on Road 5 just north of Byron. The vehicle was tagged and towed later in the week at the owner’s expense.

January 8: 8:46 p.m. – A slide-off accident was reported on U.S. 310 between Lovell and Cowley. The occupants were able to exit the vehicle, and an arriving Wyoming Highway Patrol trooper issued a citation to the driver for speeding too fast for conditions.

January 9: 9:32 a.m. – A local person was caught in a scam where a man said he was stranded in Poland and needed money to get back into the USA. He asked for money through a cash app, and money was provided. It was reported to the sheriff’s office, but nothing could be done about the transaction at that time.

10:25 a.m. – A caller reported receiving a phone call from a reported police association raising money for the fires in California. No money was given, and the reporting party simply wanted to notify the sheriff’s office. Citizens are urged to do careful research before sending money to an organization.

5:03 p.m. – A car with two Rocky Mountain High School students was reported to have slid off county road 9 and into a ditch near Wyo-Ben. A deputy responded and took information for insurance purposes, but no citation was issued. The father of one of the juveniles was coming to pull the vehicle out of the ditch.

January 10: 12:06 a.m. – A deputy reported a road hazard in the form of a deer in the northbound lane of U.S. 310 south of Lovell, but as the deputy was on the scene, the deer got up and ran away.

Three cases of livestock loose on the highway were reported Friday morning.

January 12: 7:59 a.m. – A woman in Deaver reported that a dog had chewed up the interior of her car. Ownership of the offending pooch was in question, and the woman was informed that the dispute was a civil matter.

6:46 p.m. – A deputy provided backup as a highway patrolman was performing a field sobriety test on U.S. Highway 310 near Lovell Lakes.

6:58 p.m. – A vehicle was reported stolen at Deaver Reservoir, but since the incident occurred in Park County, the matter was turned over to the Park County Sheriff’s Office.

Note: The above calls were received by the Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office. Persons arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and charges made upon initial arrest may be amended or dismissed as determined by the County Attorney.
