Stop signs in Burlington area get mixed reviews

South End Road and Bridge Supervisor Shannan Hovey discussed the eight new stop signs with the Big Horn County commissioners at their Nov. 21 meeting.
Eight stop signs were installed on Road 10, Lane 38 and 39. The installation of the stop signs was approved by the commission due to safety issues.
Hovey said while they were putting them up, some people stopped at the signs while others drove through like the signs were not there. Some of the drivers said the signs would be used as target practice. Others were supportive. Commissioner Dave Neves said he had received one thank you.
Commission chair Bruce Jolley said he could see people driving through the intersection the first time without stopping because they aren’t used to signs being there. But after the first time, they should know to stop because they have seen the stop signs. He received one complaint about the signs.
North End Road and Bridge Supervisor Eric Mann said in his experience, it takes a while. The county did something similar on the north end of the county. “It eventually does work,” Mann said. There had been quite a few accidents prior to the signs being installed.
Hovey brought to the commission’s attention a bridge in the Burlington area. The current of the river has changed, and it is trying to wash out under the cement. He has talked to the landowners, who are upset because they are losing land. He has reached out to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers but has not received any type of communication back. He is documenting all the phone calls he makes.
County engineer Willie Bridges, the commissioners and both supervisors discussed a box culvert for Road 16. Bridges said only one quote was received. The quote was $82,000 more than expected.
There was some discussion about making the area a water crossing. The cost of concrete alone would be $45,000. The commission decided to put the project on hold until the other Road & Bridge expenditures could be reviewed and the county would have a better idea of what money is still available. Commissioner Deb Craft agreed. The topic will be brought up at the next commissioner meeting.
