Rocky Mountain musical to be staged Monday and Tuesday

Rocky Mountain Middle/High School will present the school’s annual musical next Monday and Tuesday, April 28-29, at the school commons.

This year the school will stage the comedic musical “Romeo and Harriet, A Musical Tragical Comedy in Two and a Half Acts” written by Charlie Lovett with music and lyrics by Bill Francoeur.

According to play publicity, the story follows two families who are also business rivals. They are the Montagues, who have an upscale department store, and the Capulets, who have a discount mart. The families live in uptown Manhattan and are constant business rivals who argue about things such as the disgrace of wearing white after Labor Day and the horror of charging low prices on Manolo Blahniks (shoes).

Throughout the play, which is also a parody, the audience will learn about Shakespeare and his style of poetry called Iambic Pentameter. Through a version of “Family Feud” the audience will find out who lives and who dies. Characters will use a fun mix of modern speech and Shakespearean speech, so the audience gets to laugh from both time periods.

There are many well-known names in this musical that people will recognize right away. Romeo, Juliet, Friar Laurence (or Friar Tuck), Tybalt, Mercutio and, of course, Montague and Capulet. Will this story end in the age-old death of the young lovers, or will love and business sense prevail?

The musical will play at RMMHS Monday and Tuesday at 7 p.m.
