Lovell Rec holds speed camp for athletes
Josey Allen, better known as Coach Allen at Lovell High School, held a speed camp for 6-12 graders recently, sponsored by the Lovell Recreation District. The camp, billed by the Rec District as “Get Faster, Get Stronger, Get Ahead,” ran for three days, Tuesday-Thursday, July 1-3, and was an hour each day. The students reported at 9 a.m. and learned how to challenge themselves to be faster and better.
The camp was $25 for registration, and participants received a complementary speed camp T-shirt to take home.
The overall goal of the speed camp was to learn how to make an athlete better. Allen shared about his teachings, saying, “There was classroom sessions where we taught them key things about acceleration and key things about top speed.”
Allen touched on the things they focused on outside of the classroom, as well, noting, “Then we had several drills that we practiced that focused on the techniques that make you better at those. Each day they got to have some timed performances to kind of see where they were at and how good they were.”
There were around 18 participants, and the camp had a good mix of middle schoolers and high school athletes. On Thursday there was a reward for the fastest middle and high schooler. The fastest middle school participant was Blakley Piper, and the fastest high school athlete was Wilson Hendershot.
The camp was a good learning curve for the new and returning students and helped improve some speeds, Allen said.
