Mustangs sweep doubleheader in Casper

The young but improving Lovell Mustangs A team got back on the winning track by sweeping the Casper Wildcatters in Casper last Friday, June 26.

Lovell won the first game 5-4 and the second 13-4.

Game one went into extra innings. Casper led 4-1, but Lovell scored two runs in the top of the sixth, one in the seventh and one in the eighth to win the game as Lovell pitchers shut down the Casper bats.

In the sixth, Kyle Wilson led off with a double, advanced to third on a single by Dax Mangus and scored on an error. Mangus stole second and scored on an error. In the seventh, Mac Morgan led off with a single, advanced on a single by Wilson, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a Mangus single.

Lovell won the game in walk-off fashion with a two-out solo home run by Kannon Owens in the top of the eighth. Cash Wassmer worked out of a jam in the bottom of the inning to preserve the win.

Morgan and Wilson each had three hits in the game, Owens and Mangus two apiece. Rocco Rael started on the mound and pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing four runs, one earned, on six hits and three walks, striking out four. Morgan pitched one-third of an inning, Wassmer the final frame.

Game two

Lovell walloped Casper 13-4 in game two. Clinging to a 5-3 lead, the Mustangs exploded for eight runs in the top of the seventh to put the game away. Wassmer was red hot at the plate, going 4-5 with one run and an RBI, ripping both a double and a triple. Mangus was 3-4 with a double, three runs and two RBIs. Owens was 2-5 with a double and three RBIs. Easton Morgan drove in two. 

Dallin Bischoff started on the hill and allowed three runs on three hits and three walks in three innings of work. He fanned two. Wilson threw the final four innings, allowing one run on one hit and four walks, striking out four.

The Mustangs (8-18) were scheduled to play the Billings Bandits in Billings Wednesday and will travel to Lander for a pair July 7 at 5 p.m. Lovell will travel to Billings again on July 9, this time meeting the Billings Cardinals at 5 p.m. for two.
