LMS harriers open season at Cody meet

The Lovell Middle School cross country team opened the new season at the Cody Invitational Thursday afternoon and had some strong performances despite having a quite young squad, coach Joshua Sander said.

The Lovell girls team placed sixth and the boys seventh.

“We are a very young team with mainly sixth graders,” Sanders said. “It was their baptism by fire, because they had to run against the upper classes. We are still trying to get in shape. Thayne Walker is really good at pushing his limits and wanting to test his ability. He was our top male runner. Treleah Two Two is our top female runner and most experienced. She will be pushing to get into the top five for our conference. She is still working to get into shape.”

Two Two, a rare eighth grader on the squad, placed 13th in the field of 109 runners with a time of 12:39 on the 3,000-meter course. Payton Clark (grade 6) finished 40th in 14:25, Stahle Asay (6) 53rd in 15:30, Athena Grant (6) 56th in 15:40, Evalina Garcia (8) 63rd in 16:36, Megan Layne (6) 18:23, Mallory Sanders (6) 22:04 and Olivia Phillips (6) 22:23.

Walker, a sixth grader, finished 47th in the field of 96, running a time of 13:33. Johnny Allen (grade 6) finished 64th in 14:58, Hyatt Weber (6) 76th in 16:41, Brett Cordova (7) 18:45, Travis Bohn (6) 20:01 and Devin Stoker (6) 20:26.

The Bulldogs will host their annual meet at the Foster Gulch Golf Course today (Thursday) at 2 p.m.

“It should be a fairly large meet,” Sanders said. “A lot of people attend because it is a spectator’s course with a lot of chances to see the athletes run by. Some courses only offer one or two times to see the athletes.”
