Lady Grizz rebound with two wins at Greybull Invitational

The Rocky Mountain High School volleyball team went 2-4 at the Greybull Invitational last weekend, earning one victory each day and showing improvement from its previous tournament in Big Horn.

Rocky Mountain faced many of the same teams it met at the Big Horn tournament. Although the Lady Grizz did not complete a full turnaround, they emerged from the previous weekend’s slump and built momentum with two wins.

The Lady Grizz opened strongly against Big Piney with a 25-13 first-set win but dropped the next two sets 25-18 and 15-8. Rocky Mountain then earned its first victory of the tournament against Kemmerer, winning two sets 25-21, 16-14.

Saturday brought mixed results. The Lady Grizz opened the day with a 25-23, 26-24 victory over the Wyoming Indian Lady Chiefs. Southeast controlled the next match, defeating Rocky Mountain 25-9, 25-19. The Lady Grizz then fell to Greybull 25-16, 25-18.

Coach Kay Townsend said the team’s 5-1 system is working well. With Leah Haslem serving as the primary setter, Townsend expects the approach to help the Lady Grizz produce more wins.

Townsend also praised freshman Peyton Hunder for making significant strides, citing her growing “confidence on the court and improving each game.” Hunder received the team’s Spirit of the Grizz award for the week.

Rocky Mountain will host Greybull in a 2A Northwest Conference match Friday. The freshman match begins at 4 p.m., followed by junior varsity play and the varsity match at 6 p.m. The Lady Grizz will travel to conference foe Thermopolis on Saturday for games at 12, 1 and 2 p.m.
