Gordon signs updated order on sage-grouse management

CHEYENNE (WNE) — Gov. Mark Gordon on Thursday, Sept. 17, replaced a long-standing executive order with a new one designed to conserve the greater sage-grouse and maintain state management authority over the bird, a news release from Gordon’s office said.

This executive order establishes clear guidelines, such as a 5% surface disturbance cap and seasonal restrictions in Core Areas, while incentivizing economic development outside critical habitats and strictly respecting valid existing rights, the release said.

“Wyoming has consistently advocated for a Greater sage-grouse strategy that recognizes the State’s management authority over the species utilizing the best-available science,” Gordon said in the release. “Wyoming remains a leader in sage-grouse conservation, and our Core Area Protection strategy has proven its foresight over multiple administrations as an effective, state-led model. Executive Order 2026-007 ensures we continue to invest in key habitat protections alongside responsible economic development.”
