Mr. and Mrs. Dean Walker received a shock Sunday when they returned from Sunday school to find their house had burned to the ground from an unknown cause. Garth Allred, who lived south of their place and the owner of the house, saw the smoke through the trees and rushed down, but all was burned except the front of the house, which soon fell. He was unable to save anything.

One of Cowley’s oldest businesses, Cowley Equitable, has been sold to a Yuba City, California, man. The new owner, Dale Kaylor, is scheduled to take over November 1. Current owner Orin Mann, 72, has operated the store for the past 26 years. Since 1909, Mann and his father, Charles, operated the store. Mann says he plans to retire. It isn’t known whether the name of the store will be changed.

Cowley News: Cowley has a new town marshal. I had a short interview with him in his immaculate and striking uniform. His name is Don Daniels and his wife’s name is Mitzie. They moved here from Deming, N.M. He has had an impressive career. He retired from the Border Patrol and also retired from a federal position in customs. He is assigned to work 20 hours a week in Cowley during variable hours. He also reported that he will be in charge of animal control and advised the townspeople to observe the ordinances and to be sure that their animals are licensed.
