Chadron State College fall honors

Chadron State College has announced its 2023-24 fall semester honor rolls, including local students.
To be listed on the President’s List students must have completed at least 12 semester hours of college-level coursework with a 4.0 grade point average. Students qualifying for the Dean’s List must have completed the same level coursework with a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. Both must be seeking their first bachelor’s degree and have no incomplete grades for the semester.

Armory Park, Bighorn Canyon among chamber topics

A series of speakers provided updates on their respective areas of responsibility during an open mic format at the December 18 Lovell Area Chamber of Commerce general membership luncheon.
Jed Nebel, town administrator, said Phase II of the Armory Park reconstruction project is happening.
The reconstruction will include a walking path, volleyball court and outdoor amphitheater, as well as redoing the irrigation system and landscaping. Nebel also discussed the possibility of a town hall remodel.

Car and chicken coop fires lead into holiday

A pair of fire calls kept members of the Lovell Volunteer Fire Department busy in the days leading up to the Christmas holiday.
On Friday, Dec. 22, a call came in at 5:05 p.m. about a car filled with smoke at Eighth and Nevada in Lovell.
According to Assistant Chief Bob Mangus, the car, a 2016 Nissan Versa, was smoking due to an electrical fire in the area of the steering column that had also spread up into the headliner above the steering wheel.

Sheriff’s Report: Airport bomb threat found to be hoax

The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Department received the following calls for the week of December 18 to December 24:
December 18: 2:39 p.m. – A vehicle stopped in the roadway on Great Western Avenue was not in any trouble. The driver was simply playing Pokemon Go.
4:40 p.m. – A citizen came to the Annex requesting that a vehicle be trespassed from the reporting party’s property in the Lovell area.

Police Report: 1 a.m. visit by ex-girlfriend not welcome

The Lovell Police Department received the following calls for the week of December 18 to December 24:
December 18: 1:25 p.m. – A theft of $126,000 from a trust fund was reported from a resident of the Bair Trailer Court. The fund was located in San Diego, and the reporting party was asked to bring in documentation so police can determine whether to help her. The case remains under investigation.

Big Horn County 4-H holds Achievement Night celebration

Big Horn County 4-H recognized the contributions of its volunteer leaders and success of its members during its recent Achievement Night celebration.
The evening’s highlights included the presentation of nine-year member pins, considered the greatest milestone in 4-H, along with a variety of special awards recognizing outstanding achievement in 4-H.
The following Big Horn County 4-Hers received nine-year jackets: Evelyn Brown, Roseannah Brown, Hanna Haley, Kenadee Rael, Gabriel VanderPloeg, Keyanna Walker and Macie Hopkin.

Lovell council mulls water rate increase

Following up on a recommendation from CPA James Seckman from a recent audit of town finances, the Lovell Town Council recently began the process of examining a potential water rate increase.
While very financially solid overall, the town was a little short for reserves in the water fund, Seckman told the council at the November council meeting.
Seckman said, with cash in the amount of $1,080,880 and operating expenses of $941,883, the town has about 13 months of reserves in the water fund.

That doesn’t mean that holding livestock in the weather was without real difficulties and cost, but long-term damage should be negligible, according to local ranchers.

Blue Santa program delivers presents, hope

The Lovell Police Department helped to deliver presents, joy and good spirits to Lovell families Sunday.
In the Blue Santa program, part of the large Share a Stocking program that brings gifts and clothes to families in the community who are in need, police officers drive around town with Santa and drop off gifts and groceries to those in need.
Dan Laffin, Chief of Police, said that the program has been a priority since he was first appointed to his position in 2017.
