Library abounds with events in January

With 22 events open to the public in January, the Lovell Library has near daily offerings for the public.
The first event of the year, Teen Xtreme on Tuesday evening, was well attended, librarian Cathy Collins said. The event is powered through a grant by Rocky Mountain Power for teens 12-18 based on the theme of making your dreams come true.

New call number for free mental health sessions

The phone number for Big Horn County residents wanting free mental health sessions has changed, County Prevention Specialist Travis Sylvester said as he updated the Big Horn County commissioners at their December 19 meeting.
The new phone number is 307-777-8788. The free sessions are for the ag, farming and rodeo communities in the county, which, as Sylvester pointed out, is just about every resident.

Winter survival skills presentations planned in Greybull and Lovell at senior centers

University of Wyoming Extension educator Melissa Cook and therapist Becky Myers are planning presentations in three Big Horn County communities this month that cover essential topics to ensure safety, well-being and happiness this winter.
Open to everyone, the first presentation was held Wednesday, Jan. 3, at the Burlington Fire Hall, and two more are planned for  January 17 from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. at the South Big Horn Senior Center in Greybull and Friday, Jan. 19, from 12:15 to 1 p.m. at the North Big Horn Senior Center in Lovell.

Rec Center gymnastics starts up again

Gymnastics has started up again for community kids ages 4 and up.
The program meets once a week for 40 minutes. The classes are $30 a month and open to any children who are potty-trained, Lovell Recreation District Director Kristine Henley said.
Sign-ups are open through March, Henley said. Class time is dependent on the child’s placement and could be at 3:30 p.m., 4:20 p.m. or 5:10 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. No prior experience is required, and children should wear their hair up before each session.

Bairco hosts hands-on field trip for LHS students

There’s nothing quite like practical experience when it comes to learning a trade, and Lovell High School vocational teacher Bret George has found a willing partner in Devin Bair and his crew at Bairco Construction.
George is teaching heavy equipment operation to students in his Auto Mechanics 3 course through the Northwest College Center for Training and Development, a concurrent enrollment program that will give students who complete the course an industry certification.
NWC-CTD provides the curriculum, and George teaches the course.

Warmer than average temperatures continue

Mild winter weather will continue for the Big Horn Basin in early January.
Wyoming will stay relatively calm and quiet the first week of January, National Weather Service meteorologist Joshua Rowe said. There is a low chance of snowfall on Thursday, Jan. 4 for southwestern Wyoming.
Temperatures will be pretty close to what they have been this winter for most of Wyoming, without much wind or precipitation, Rowe said.

Mental health awareness and resources featured at the Lovell-Rocky basketball games

In an effort to promote mental health awareness and resources, the recent boys basketball game between the Lovell Bulldogs and the Rocky Mountain Grizzlies turned into more than a rivalry game. The game featured mascot themed hand signs that presented mental health statistics and resources, drawing attention to this critical issue in a creative and engaging way.

‘Wonky Donkey’ a Christmas tradition for local ‘grandma’

Christmas cheer comes in many forms, and for one Lovell “grandma,” cheer was spread for many years in the form of a special gift that came with a performance.
Around five years ago, Lorna Fowler of Lovell received a recommendation from her daughter, Colleen, that she just had to watch a YouTube
video of a Scottish grandmother reading the children’s book “The Wonky Donkey” to her tiny grandson, laughing her way through the reading.

U.S. Forest Service updates commissioners

The Big Horn County Commissioners received updates from District Ranger Mark Foster about the Medicine Wheel Ranger District Fiscal Year 2023 Annual Report at their December 6 meeting.
He said the report is part of an ongoing dialogue.
“Our annual report for the district talks about some success for the last year. One of the things we are really emphasizing is partnerships, engagement with our local community. I hope that that comes through.”

Work on Hyart lobby repair moves closer to finish

One year after a burst pipe flooded the lobby of the historic Hyart Theatre in downtown Lovell, work on the ceiling of the theater lobby is moving the repair project a major step forward.
The theater was closed for two months following the water line break as work was performed to remove asbestos-containing textured ceiling material from the lobby, make repairs, deep clean, move and replace some equipment and move and re-stock supplies.
