Bischoff to officiate Mustang Days parade

Longtime educator Chauna Bischoff has been selected by the Mustang Days Committee to act as official parade marshal of the Mustang Days Parade on Saturday.
Mustang Days parade coordinator Kristine Henley said Bischoff’s name came up more than once, and she seemed like a good fit for the distinguished honor.

Hospital demo of new surgical robotic equipment well-attended

North Big Horn Hospital’s staff surgeon Dr. Michael Hill introduced his new assistant “Eve” on Thursday. Eve is a da Vinci Xi state of the art robotic surgical assistant purchased by the hospital earlier this year. Hill said the equipment causes less trauma to the patient during surgery and allows them to recover more quickly and with less pain than previously used methods. Hill said the benefits of using robotics increase with the severity of the surgery.

Wilson completes 100-mile run on Bighorns

The Bighorn Mountain Trail 100 is an epic mountain endurance running adventure that crosses through the Little Bighorn and Tongue River areas of the Bighorn National Forest, and Cleve Wilson of Lovell recently completed the distance and crossed the finish line.
Participants have 35 hours to navigate the hundred miles on the remote, out-and-back course where Mother Nature provides more than 20,500 feet of ascent and 20,750 feet of descent, testing the most seasoned ultra-runners.

SAR teams search Crystal Creek area for clues about missing woman

North and South Big Horn Search and Rescue teams conducted a search for clues in the cold case regarding the disappearance of Danell Messick on Friday and Saturday near the Crystal Creek rest area off U.S. Highway 14A east of Lovell, in the Big Horn Mountains. Messick, a Cody resident at the time of her disappearance, has been missing for three years.

Cowley man arrested for possession of child porn

Big Horn County Sheriff’s deputies recently arrested 39-year-old Gregory Brimhall Weinand of Cowley on a warrant out of Montgomery County, Texas, on charges related to alleged possession of child pornography. Deputies assisted U.S. Marshalls with the arrest of Weinand in Cowley last month.
After being held for a short time at the Big Horn County Detention Center in Basin, Weinand was extradited to Texas by authorities from that jurisdiction.

Firefighters respond to burning vehicle near state line

Deaver/Frannie firefighters were gathered for a board meeting in Deaver when a call came in about a Dodge pickup truck that caught fire on Highway 310 near the Montana/Wyoming state line.
The call came in at 5:15 p.m. on June 20, and since firefighters were already assembled for their meeting, they were able to get to the burning vehicle within minutes. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, but not before the fire completely totaled the vehicle. Fortunately, the driver was not injured, and there were no passengers.

Sheriff’s report: Suspicious digging involved cactus, not dead bodies

The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office received the following calls for the week of June 17-23:
June 17: Three mini horses were reported loose on Highway 310 near Cowley.
Deputies investigated suspicious activity on BLM land near Lovell. The reporting party thought individuals were burying a dead body, when in fact they were digging up cactus plants.

Police Report: Kids playing near canal told to quiet down

The Lovell Police Department received the following calls for the week of June 17-23:
June 17: Officers responded to a call regarding two friends who were arguing over possession of banking related items. One person involved agreed to return the items.
During a welfare check, officers discovered the body of a man who was deceased. The county coroner is investigating cause of death. There appeared to be no foul play.

Wild Horse presentation enjoyed at Lovell library

Pryor Mountain Wild Mustang Center director Nancy Cerroni was invited to give two informative presentations to young Lovell Library attendees this month. As an educator of many years and one of the most knowledgeable people in the Lovell area about the wild mustangs, Cerroni said she was happy to make the presentation to local youth.

Road work continues at Ok-A-Beh

Road work continues in the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area this week.
During the week of June 24, crews will be milling and patching the Ok-A-Beh Road and Highway 313 in the north district of the park.
There will be single lane closures during daytime hours while work is being conducted. The roadway will be open overnight with traffic delineation through the active worksites due to narrowing of lanes and staged construction equipment.
