Kane Christmas bird count slated for Saturday

The annual Kane Christmas bird count will be held on Saturday, Dec. 16, in the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area.
This will be the 33rd year for the Kane count. Many people have been participating for several years, but Bighorn Canyon is always looking for new people.
“You don’t have to be an expert. We will pair you with one of our amazing, longtime birders,” said Christy Fleming, Bighorn Canyon Chief of Interpretation.

Threepeat victory for Lovell Knowledge Bowl team

Catching up from behind, it wasn’t until the end of the final round that Knowledge Bowl coach Bret George knew Lovell High School would win Big Horn Basin Knowledge Bowl.
The meet took place on December 6 starting bright and early at 9 a.m. at Greybull High School. George had hope that his team would win the whole day, but the victory came down to the wire.

Commodities Distribution

A USDA Commodities distribution is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 21, from 4 to 5:30 p.m.  Residents of Big Horn County may pick up commodities at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 520 Montana Ave., Lovell.
Volunteers will be distributing a variety of dried, fresh and canned foods.

Elk in Area 45 test positive for brucellosis

CHEYENNE - The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has detected brucellosis in Elk Hunt Area 45 on the western slope of the Big  Horn Mountains. The cow elk was harvested by a hunter in late October.
The positive detection was confirmed in November by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Ames, Iowa. The Wyoming Livestock Board is working closely with Game and Fish to monitor the disease.
Brucellosis has not been documented in livestock in this area.

Accidental shooting leads to death of young local man

An accidental shooting has claimed the life of a young area man.
A report was received at 7:12 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 28, that a young man accidentally shot himself at the Yellowtail Habitat east of Lovell.
David Hatch, 21, suffered a gunshot wound to the head due to a gun that he believed was unloaded, said Big Horn County Sherriff Ken Blackburn.

Seven local musicians chosen for Wyoming All-State Band, Choir and Orchestra

Seven talented young men and women from Lovell and Rocky Mountain high schools have been selected for the Wyoming All-State Band, Choir and Orchestra honors event to be held January 14-16 at Casper Natrona High School.
Rocky Mountain senior Gwynff Bodtke pulled off the rare feat of being selected All-State for all four years of her high school career. A flutist, Bodtke was chosen for the All-State Band her freshman and sophomore year and selected to the All-State Orchestra her junior and senior year.

Bighorn National Forest Christmas tree permits are available to purchase online through Recreation.gov. 
To purchase a Christmas tree permit, visit Recreation.gov and search for Bighorn Christmas Tree Permits. It is important to carefully read the overview and need-to-know information prior to purchasing the permit. Visitors will also need to set up or log in to a Recreation.gov account to complete the transaction.

Surgical robots the future of North Big Horn Hospital

The purchase of surgical robotics was approved at a special board meeting of the North Big Horn Hospital District Board of Trustees.
On November 30, those in attendance voted unanimously to approve the purchase of the robotics.
North Big Horn Hospital surgeon Dr. Michael Hill said the robotics will lead to improved patient outcomes.

Warmer weather hits Wyoming this winter

The winter months of December through April are expected to be slightly warmer than average for the Big Horn Basin.
Warning Coordination Meteorologist Lance VandenBoogart said that it will be warmer due to a global pattern that influences the jetstream and overall weather of the season. The national Climate Prediction Center is the official entity that issues these season wide predictions, VandenBoogart said.

Promising season for Wyoming Academic Challenge

Wyoming Academic Challenge (WAC), a statewide knowledge competition between opposing high school teams, has already started their season in earnest.
The club members competed at the first meet of the season at Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne November 4 and went to their second meet at Thermopolis Middle School December 2.
For a small school, the Lovell High School team represents very well, WAC advisor Bret George said.
