Police Report Child yelling at night told to quiet down

The Lovell Police Department received the following calls for the week of January 29 to February 4:
January 29: 6:19 a.m.- An abandoned house on Nevada Avenue had the back door open. It was determined that the local caretaker of the property was in the hospital and unable to care for the house. The homeowner does not live in town. There was no evidence of criminal activity.

Forest urges respect for seasonal road closures to reduce damage

SHERIDAN — The dry winter and low snowpack have created a new issue for forest users and managers, a Bighorn National Forest official said this week.
Many routes that are typically snow bound now look inviting and open enough to drive in a wheeled vehicle. Even if it looks inviting, check to make sure it’s legally open to the type of vehicle you are driving. Law enforcement recently issued citations to motorists for driving on closed routes and causing resource damage.

Rocky musicians earn honors at Showalter Music Festival

Middle school musicians from around the Big Horn Basin learned the art of performance before judges at the annual Showalter Music Festival Saturday at Northwest College in Powell, earning many ribbons on the day.

Year of the Dragon event at library all month

According to the Chinese lunisolar calendar, 2024 is the Year of the Dragon, which is why this month the Lovell Library features a dragon themed scavenger hunt.
February 10 is the new year, according to the Chinese lunisolar calendar, but Danielle Henley, library page at the Lovell Library, said that the scavenger hunt kicked off February 1. Each month, a different member of the librarian staff arranges a fun event for the month, and this month was Henley’s turn.

Big Horn County Republicans are hosting the quarterly Republican State Central Committee (SCC) meeting this weekend at the Lovell Community Center. All meetings are open to the public.

North Big Horn Hospital doing well financially

North Big Horn Hospital District is doing well financially, as was discussed at the first board meeting of the year on January 16.
On the financial side, North Big Horn Hospital District CEO Eric Connell said that overall income was $182,000 compared to a budget of $118,000, so the hospital is coming ahead financially.
The board approved the monthly payables, which is all the checks that had been written that month, Connell said. There are no issues or financial concerns to note, he said.

Commodities Distribution

A USDA Commodities distribution is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 15, from 4 to 5:30 p.m.  Residents of Big Horn County may pick up commodities at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 520 Montana Ave., Lovell.
Volunteers will be distributing a variety of dried, fresh and canned foods.

Farm Bureau Federation announces scholarship details

The Big Horn County Farm Bureau Federation will be awarding three to four scholarships, in the amount of $400 to $500, to high school seniors or undergraduate college students.  Students must be accepted to a technical or trade school, two-year community college or accredited four-year college or university. Priority will be given to those attending a technical or trade school or those enrolled in an agricultural program.

Norovirus making the rounds in Wyoming again

Norovirus, a familiar culprit, is probably behind recently increased reports of illnesses in Wyoming, according to the Wyoming Department of Health (WDH).
 Commonly described as “stomach flu” or “food poisoning,” norovirus is spread when people eat contaminated food, touch contaminated surfaces or come in close contact with someone already sick.
 Matt Peterson, WDH surveillance epidemiologist, said contamination is frequently not obvious.
