The Foster Gulch Golf Course is enjoying good times and has some big plans in the works, board president Tim Winland reported to the Lovell Area Chamber of Commerce membership at the January 15 luncheon.

Gov. Gordon proclaims Feb. 1 ‘Unclaimed Property Day’

CHEYENNE – Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon is encouraging all residents of the State to take two minutes of their time to search www.mycash.wyo.gov and see if they are entitled to any of the $110 million in Unclaimed Property that has been turned over to the Wyoming State Treasurer’s Office.
To help get the word out, Gov. Gordon has proclaimed February 1 “Unclaimed Property Day.”

Weed and Pest gives annual report to commission

Big Horn County Weed and Pest Supervisor Cliff Winters told the county commissioners on January 16 that Weed and Pest brought in more than $1 million in grants last year, doubling the amount from the previous year.
 “We were very successful in going after that additional money,” Winters said as part of his 2023 annual report to the commission.
As far as contracts go, they were able to secure contracts with federal and state partners. Included among them were WYDOT, USFS, BLM and Game & Fish. The contracts totaled nearly $800,000.

Big Horn County Republicans plan Feb. 9 fundraiser

Cowboy poet, humorist and storyteller Andy Nelson of the Clear Out West Radio Show will perform at a Big Horn County Republican Party fundraiser scheduled for Friday, Feb. 9, at the Lovell Community Center.
The evening features a meet-and-mingle at 5 p.m., followed by a prime rib dinner and the show at 6 p.m.  Silent and live auctions are planned, as well.
Tickets are on sale at $50 per person and can be obtained by calling 307-213-0493 or 307-272-4188. At the door, tickets can be purchased for $60.

New reception desk in place at Bighorn Canyon

The crew has finished, the dust has cleared, and the main visitor greeting area at the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area Cal S. Taggart Visitor Center has a brand new desk in place.
Work on the new desk began January 2 and wrapped up January 12, Chief of Interpretation Christy Fleming said. Staff members started “moving back into” the reception area on Saturday, Jan. 13, and the move was completed by Tuesday, Jan. 16.

Chronicle receives honors at Wyoming newspaper convention

The Lovell Chronicle received multiple awards at the 125th annual convention of the Wyoming Press Association, held January 18-20 at the Ramkota Hotel and Convention Center in Casper.
The Chronicle received second-place honors for the WPA Robert Warner Photography Award, and Chronicle editor David Peck was judged to have taken the photo of the year for small weekly newspapers with his photo “Smoky Battle” showing Lovell volunteer fireman Kyle Leithead emerging from a burning garage east of Lovell on December 13, 2022.

Steed’s latest: A restored hay sled

Pat Steed is at it again. North Big Horn County’s master craftsman of all things horse drawn tried out his latest restoration project Sunday afternoon at his home in southwest Lovell, a more than 100-year-old hay sled.
“Vic McDarment owned it,” Steed said of the late BLM wrangler as he cruised around his place and the adjacent neighborhood. All that was there was rotten wood and the metal parts. Someone had driven over it in his driveway.

Landfill near Lovell to remain open

The North Big Horn Landfill, which was announced last September to be in the process of shutdown, will remain open.
Gary Grant, manager of the landfill, said that a decision has been reached to keep the landfill open for the foreseeable future. The landfill is located 2.5 miles out of Lovell and is a 71-acre facility.

Governor Gordon wary of ‘unintended consequences’ of property tax relief

Mark Gordon identified the continued diversification of the economy, property tax relief, mental health resources, the recruitment of first responders and the need for the education system to meet kids where they are as the top priorities of his second term.
